Macksville is a town located in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. It is situated on the Nambucca River and is a popular stopover for many tourists who are traveling between Sydney and Brisbane. The town boasts a long and rich history, dating back to the early 19th century. From its early days as a humble sawmill town, to its prominence as a bustling riverside community, Macksville has had a storied past that is worth exploring.

Early History

Before the arrival of European settlers, the area where Macksville now stands was inhabited by the Gumbaynggirr people. They used the river for fishing and would camp along its banks while on their travels through the region. The arrival of Europeans in the 1820s had a profound impact on the region. A number of timber getters established sawmills along the river to take advantage of the abundant resources available in the region. Macksville was one such sawmill town, established in the 1840s by Walter Mason, who named the town after his birthplace in Scotland.

Growth and Development

Over the next century, Macksville continued to grow and develop. The town became a vital hub for the timber industry, with many sawmills sprouting up around the region. The establishment of the North Coast railway line in the early 20th century opened up new opportunities for the town, with many farmers and businesses establishing themselves in the area. Macksville also became a prominent center for the dairy industry, with numerous creameries and milk factories being established. The town's location on the river also made it an important transportation hub, with ships and barges regularly using the river to transport goods to and from the town.

The Macksville Bridge Disaster

On the evening of 22 December 1927, tragedy struck the town when the Macksville Bridge collapsed. The bridge was a vital link between the towns of Nambucca Heads and Macksville, and its failure resulted in the deaths of 15 people. The disaster had a profound impact on the town, with many of its residents being forced to rebuild their lives from scratch. In honor of those who lost their lives, a memorial was erected on the bridge site in 1928, which still stands today.

The Macksville Hospital

The Macksville Hospital was established in 1915 and has served the community ever since. At the time of its establishment, the hospital was a 10-bed facility that was staffed by a single nurse. Over time, the hospital grew and expanded, with new facilities being added and staff being recruited to meet the growing demands of the community. Today, the hospital is a modern and comprehensive facility, serving the needs of the people of Macksville and surrounding areas.
